What made you decide to do something about your weight? What was your turning point?

June 2005, I was in a wedding wearing a dress size 22. I look at those pictures of myself noticing a young woman disappointed with her body. I have been an active member of Curves since September 2004, exercising practically everyday, but still did not change my eating habits which consisted of fried foods and dining out everyday with my family. I maybe lost a half a pound here and there and sometimes gained, but was getting tired of being obese; that was my turning point. January 2006, was when I decided to do something about my weight and participated in the Six Week Solution at my local Curves; I had heard amazing things about the program from other members. I learned prior to starting the Six Week Solution that I had high cholesterol, and at that time I weighed 247 pounds, so I took a chance. It would prove to be the one of the best decisions I have ever made.

What was really special or unique about the Curves program? Why do you think it worked when others did not?
The Curves program is special and unique in that the Six Week Solution is not a diet; it is healthy way of eating. Plus, the 30 minute workout is amazing because you work at your own intensity. For me, I work out more than 3 times a week at a “power intensity” meaning I work the machines at a fast and strong pace. It is encouraging when I have a remarkable staff and an environment of supporting members that motivate me each day. I think Curves has worked for me because I could not tell you how many members have congratulated me on my weight loss and told me I inspire them, saying I am their role model. I have motivated not only myself, but others like Curves members, coworkers, and family. I actually have never tried any other weight loss programs, such as the point system through Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. It was just a matter of me learning how to eat right to raise my metabolism and do some kind of exercise.

How has eating the Curves way helped you change your lifestyle and lose weight? What do you like about it?
I continue to adapt the Six Week Solution lifestyle of eating healthy to my daily routine. I eat 5 times a day to increase my metabolism and continue to work out more. I usually work out at Curves three times a week and try to get in two days of cardio (run or bike). Also, I am more aware of my diet because I keep track of the carbohydrates, protein, fat, and calories in a journal. I love the fact that I can lose 1-2 pounds a week, and if I do have a bad day of eating, I know how to take those pounds off in 2 days with Phase 1 of the Curves Six Week Solution. The best part is I am living by the Curves motto: I have definitely “amazed myself.”

What were some of the challenges in losing weight and how did you meet them?
Some of the challenges I face still today are family functions where food is involved, holiday seasons, and the stress of studying for the CPA exam. I used to turn to food for comfort, but now all I have to do is go to Curves or run/bike. But it does not stop there; my goal weight is to be 150 pounds and be a size six/eight. I want to continue to challenge myself by trying new things and become more athletic. For example, I have tried new foods such as yogurt and oatmeal and I can honestly say I enjoy running and other outdoor activities, such as canoeing and biking. All you need to do is set reasonable goals for yourself and you will achieve them. It might take time to lose weight and/or achieve your goals, but do not get discouraged; just believe in yourself.

What’s the difference in how you used to feel at your old weight, and how you feel now? What do you love about your lighter self?
Granted I am still marked as “overweight” according to BMI tests, but I feel healthier with my new weight. My quality of life has improved in that I no longer hyperventilate when I run. I have participated in multiple 5K and 10K runs and I know how to control my breathing. My motto right now is “towards 26.2,” meaning I will run in a full marathon in the near future. I finished my first half marathon (13.1 miles) in May 2007, which was a huge deal for me. I look in the mirror and am very proud of myself for my accomplishments. I love to shop for new clothes now, however it is becoming very expensive, but it is totally worth it! In the end, the best part about my lighter self is how I am an inspiration to my family, friends, coworkers, and fiancé in leading healthier lives.
